What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)?

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, or OCD, is a mental health problem where a person gets caught up in a cycle of unwanted thoughts and worries, which make them feel anxious or uncomfortable. It is characterised by two main components:

  • Obsessions: These are intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that cause feelings of anxiety, discomfort, or disgust. Common obsessions include fear of contamination, obsession with symmetry, fear of acting blasphemously, and fear of possibly harming others or themselves.

  • Compulsions: These are repeated actions or routines performed to relieve the distress caused by obsessions. Common compulsions include excessive hand washing, cleaning, counting, ordering, repeating, avoiding triggers, hoarding, neutralizing, seeking assurance, praying, and checking things

Common triggers for OCD symptoms include heightened stress, changes in routine, exposure to specific situations or objects, and the fear of uncertainty. Additionally, personal experiences, traumatic events, or a family history of OCD may contribute to triggering symptoms.

Treatment often involves a combination of therapy, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and medications to manage symptoms.

While there is no definitive cure, effective treatment can significantly reduce symptoms and improve the quality of life.

Best practice care!
